On 15th June, 1917, 5th London of 169 Brigade, 56th Division, moved into the front line at Wancourt, near Arras, where they remained until relieved on 20th June. They came under a considerable amount of shell fire while in these positions especially during the first two days when the enemy attacked the battalion on their left and some of the shelling that accompanied this fell on their trenches. 5th London sustained a number of casualties during this five day period in the front line, one of them being Albert Scagell, who was killed on 19th June. |
